Viking Longship

A design originating in the stoneage, and came into its final form in the 9th to 13th centuries. these ships had a narrow hull, and a shallow draft which allowed speed, maneuverability, and beach landings. the ships shallow draft also allowed navigation in waters only 1 meter deep.

The ships almost symmetrical prow and stern made it easy to change direction, with the ability to reverse instead of needing to turn, a great addition in northen latitudes, where sea ice and iceburgs are a major threat to other craft. the lightweight design also meant it could be able to be turned upside down and used as shelter in camp.

overall, these ships were the state of the art warships of the time, being not only costly, and prized possessions of their owners and crews, but also a formidable fighting force.

Ralph's edit: Interesting fact about the symmetrical front/back. TODAY I LEARNED.

Do it while you can, not when you can’t.
