Alexander J. Mercer Also known as "Prototype", or by his code name Zeus, he was the former chief investigator of the Blacklight project at Gentek.

After learning that those affiliated with the project were being systematically murdered, Alex tried to flee the city with the research sample contained in a vial. Cornered at Penn Station, Alex smashed the vial and unleashed the deadly virus into the environment. This resulted in a viral outbreak that eventually covered the entire island of Manhattan. After waking up in a Gentek hub with no memory of his past, Alex Mercer escaped the building, soon discovering his new powers and abilities, bestowed by the virus he unleashed. He begins to use his powers to obtain fragments of his memory as he traveled all over New York to catch those responsible. Alex Mercer is the protagonist of Prototype and the main antagonist in Prototype 2. He is named "Prototype" (The prototype) or ZEUS as a code name by the United States Army and Blackwatch. He is an "imperfect" incarnation of the Blacklight virus, giving him superhuman strength, powers, and other abilities beyond the reach of an ordinary human. Biologically it would be one step higher than humans.

Alex Mercer has offensive, defensive and viral powers.

Offensive:
Claws: Alex can transform his arms into a kind of claws sharp like steel blades, these claws are used for close combat. With them he can carry out a ranged attack, which taking advantage of the ground can make large spikes emerge.

Fists: In this attack mode, Mercer creates a large biomass in his arms that are used to crush his opponents. They are especially useful against cars, tanks and tanks.

Whip: Mercer transforms his arm into a kind of retractable tentacle finished in a kind of cutting blade, due to the morphology it is used as if it were a whip, being able to catch objects or people from a distance. It is especially useful for shooting down aerial threats like helicopters.

Muscle mass: With this ability, Mercer considerably increases the muscle mass and strength of his arms, being able to throw things with greater force and effectiveness. This ability is really useful against human enemies.

Sword: Mercer with this ability transforms his arm into a large blade, which has a shape similar to a sword. This is arguably Mercer's most deadly combat ability as in the game it is useful against all sorts of enemies, including mutants.

Defensive:
Shield: With this ability, Mercer makes biomass rise from one of his shoulders, being able to create with it a large shield that can be deployed and retracted at will. Its protection is limited but does not pose any inconvenience in terms of movement and agility.

Armor: Through this power, Alex covers his entire body with a kind of viral biomass armor (which gives him a very mutant appearance). The protection is total, but it limits the jumps, the speed at which Mercer can move habitually and the power to glide using this power is deactivated.

Viral:
Consumption: Thanks to this ability, Alex Mercer can consume any human or mutant. By consuming a person or mutant, as a "virus" it absorbs the victim's DNA and can access their memories and abilities. For example, if it is a human it acquires its knowledge or if it is a creature, it can acquire its abilities and powers. If the person, that is if the absorbed DNA is human, Alex can use that person's physical appearance as a "disguise" with full control over it. By consuming the human, Alex regenerates his health and strength. It can be said that this ability transforms Alex into a biologically lethal and virtually invincible life form. Strength, Speed, Jump and Temporal Flight: Once transformed into a "Prototype" or "Runner", superhuman strength and speed become a standard trait of the individual. The force allows you to kill a living being easily with your fists or grab large and heavy objects that for a normal person would be impossible. The superhuman speed that the Blacklight grants, allows you to run at unusual speeds, climb walls running, perform great jumps and even glide in the air.

Thermal Vision: This power allows Mercer to switch to thermal vision.

Vision of infected: With this ability Alex can see all the infected located around him, and thus identifying them with the home sensor, Alex with this ability receives many color points, for his next attack
