During special occasions, these badges are worn on the right sleeve of a mage.
They also help to identify a mage's rank/role in battle.

The wolf is a more of a strategic role, the bor is a frontline fighter that deals with close combat, the owl plays the role of the stealth/ambush fighter,and in some cases owls are also medics. Finally, the eagle performs surveillance and a hidden leaderehip role. The Hawk also performs this role as the King of the nation and as general.
