Miscellaneous
Hi. I have made some traditional Japanese items, imagery, and decor. These were used a while ago and in present day. Here's some information and labelling on all of these fine things.
1. Torii Gate
The Torii Gate is traditionally found near or at the entrance to a Shinto shrine, representing the transition from the mundane environment to the sacred. In the times it was built and praised, and sometimes even in modern times, it is forbidden to go under a Torii Gate when you are impure (Diseased, sick, dying, hurt, dirty, etc).
2. Gong w/ mallet
Though the gong is certainly not originated in Japan, it was still (Like any other East and Southeast Asian country) a very powerful object. The string on the mallet in this figure is smart-stretchable. For no reason, just because.
3. Light sources
Left to right:
Chochin Lantern, Andon Lamp/Lantern, Toro
The Chochin Lantern was a simple lantern meant to be portable, these objects have been made for almost 10 centuries.
The Andon Lamp/Lantern is a protective light source shielded by paper covering. Generally they are made with extreme care by experienced Japanese woodworkers.
The Toro was a large light source made of various materials, like wood, stone, or metal. Originating in China, they can also be found in Vietnam and Korea.
4. Statues
Left to right:
Dragon Statue, Buddha Statue, Samurai Statue
The Dragon was a powerful symbol of Imperial control and power, Buddhist law, and the rain and heaven. Asian dragons are not like European or any other dragons, but similar at the same time.
Buddhism is a long-practiced religion in Japan, since the 6th century CE. Statues were often made in honor of Buddha and Buddhism, including the power of Buddha law. Buddha is a pretty funny word when you type it over and over again, hm?
The samurai was an elite caste of warriors in Japan. Statues of the samurai represented their will, power, or the way of the warrior; Bushido. Honor in life and death, wisdom, benevolence, and patience were the virtues of the true warrior. They protected Japan (Kind of also fighting it, if you look at it like that) for many years until the introduction of the Imperial government crushed them. Of course, that was a mistake, because Imperialism in Japan ended in two large wastelands instead of cities...
5. Banners
Includes:
Base banner format, Japanese flag banner, sashimono 'attachment'
Banners were, like many other cultures, important to Japan. Not much is to be said.
The Japanese flag, or Hinomaru/Nisshōki, is the current flag of the Japanese people and country.
A sashimono was a flag representing clan or status attached to the back of the samurai for identification during battle. They had symbols, words, or other types of imagery on them. When all the samurai looked the same, you don't want to accidentally kill your best friend, do you? Remember, friendly fire is not tolerated...
6. Symbols
Top to bottom:
Oda, Tomoe, Takeda
Oda was a family of daimyōs that were a powerful political force founded in the 13th century by Tairu no Chikazane. They ruled until 1871, abolished with the end of the Han system. The home province was Echizen; Owari, and the final ruler of the Oda clan was Oda Nobutoshi. Their parent house was the Tairu clan.
Tomoe is not a family or clan or house, but an element of customization in Japanese mon. Commonly translates to 'comma'.
Takeda was a family of daimyōs that were a short-lived samurai clan founded in the 12th century by Takeda Nobuyoshi. They ruled until 1582, until defeated by Oda Nobunaga. They were based in Kai Province of present-day Yamanashi Prefecture. Their parent house was the Minamoto clan.
So yes, that is it. I might make a part 2 of this pack. Or maybe make a pack just centered around Japanese symbols and stuff. I'm sorry if any of this is inaccurate, I got it from google.
If you have anything in specific you'd like to see me make (E.G. A weapon, character, something like that), I would be more then glad to make it. Don't be afraid to ask.
Have a wonderful day. Itterasshai!
