The Remington "New Army" Revolver was a Cap and ball gun patented in 1858 by Samuel Remington (Yet produced till 1862), renowned for it's closed top design, and accurate shots, until it's production was ceased in 1873 to be replaced by the 1875 Remington.
The Remington revolver was a secondary, supplemental issue firearm for the Union Army until the Colt factory fire of 1864. Due to the fire, the Colt 1860 Army was not available for some time. Subsequently, large numbers of the Remington revolver were ordered by the U.S. government, and by the end of March 1862, The Union army had taken delivery from the Remington factory of only 7,250 .36-cal. revolvers and 850 .44-cal. Beals revolvers at a cost to the Army of $15 each.
It saw use in the American West, both in its original percussion configuration and the metallic cartridge conversion, as well as around the world, including Native Americans, the Hawaiian Kingdom, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, The Russian Empire, The Empire of Japan, and the Second Mexican Empire.
Notorious users were Frank James, who used Remintons up until he gave himself up in 1881.
General George Armstrong Custer, who carried one for most of his time in the Civil War.
And Buffalo Bill cody, who used an ivory-handled New Model Army .44 from 1863 until 1906, when he gave it to his ranch foreman with a handwritten note which said that, "It never failed me."
