The Dojo\’s YouTube channel only reached 1 Mil a year or 2 ago, which is great, but that\’s about 100 people.

Compare that to how fast other solo animators like Psychicpebbles, Pikapetey, Egoraptor, Rachel Kim, and other animators who practiced not only animation but the way they designed their characters, and sound design, grew in the relatively same time.

Character design isn\’t just optional, it\’s a core part of animation as a whole!

Look at any show from any generation and notice how they ALL have character designs. Hell before we even had animation, artists were doing character designs. Just look at old paintings of Greek gods. All they had for reference were words. And guess what, they designed their looks off of that.

Really this whole character design doesn\’t matter thing is only existent in our small sector of the internet animation community. Just look at animators on Newgrounds, or YouTube. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mRpiBvwKX6c

Also notice how out of all of the 12 animation principles, when almost all of them are focused on animation techniques, there\’s one that is specifically about appeal, AKA character design. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uDqjIdI4bF4

And as I said, you need to combine these elements to make something truly great.

If you don\’t combine these traits, you end up with Elements, and the only thing you have going for you is the animation.

  • Replying to comment by: Ramoxfire V2Good design DOSE NOT make good animation GOOD ANIMATION make

I really don\’t like repeating myself, but at this point the last time I said it was months ago, and the way Ralph organizes posts, it would take soooo long to dig it up, so here we go

As I\’ve saide before, animation is a huge blanket term. There\’s plenty of things that go into making a good animation, besides the animation.

A good animated show that doesn\’t have the best animation but is still a great show is Bojack Horseman. Most adult animated comedies don\’t have the best animation, but it\’s the writing and the jokes that makes them great.

An example of a well animated show that\’s bad is SAO. Now in the beginning, SAO wasn\’t really that bad. Certainly wasn\’t the best trapped in an MMO anime, but it was at least above average.

But midway in the series, you start to see it all crack down.

The choreography is bad, the music is average, the writing is bad, and most of the character designs are booorrrrinnng.
It doesn\’t matter how good the animation is, when the show is fundamentally flawed, the animation isn\’t gonna save it.

A good analogy for the whole blanket term thingy, is this.

In shooters, a lot of people think all there is to be good at them is to have good aim, and while yes, good aim is VERY important, but there\’s more to it than that.

There\’s awareness, map knowledge, teamwork, there might be other gimmicks to learn like Fortnite\’s build mechanics.
You don\’t know how many times my team got wiped because no one was looking behind the team when we were holding long doors.

A lot of people think all there is to Animation is the animation, and while it is VERY important, there\’s more to it.

There\’s sound design, character design, writing if you\’re trying to make a story.

Now you don\’t HAVE to be good at all these things at once, because in the professional field there are separate jobs for animators and character designers. But it is a wise idea to learn this stuff so you\’ll have better chances and options later if you choose to pursue animation as a career. Stuff like character design, despite what I have said before, is student level.

It\’s good to learn the rules before you break em as they say

That\’s why in classic art schools, they usually tell you to focus on making realistic drawings, before developing your own style.

We need to combine good animation and good character design to make something truly unique.

A YouTube channel named Sugarpunch Studio makes great videos about character design and animation, you should give em a watch https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wTfjABD1mz0
