The Remington 1875 revolver is an improved version of the percussion Remington New Army, and was manufactured by Remington & Sons from 1875 to 1889. The Remington 1875 features a bored through cylinder to facilitate the usage of metallic cartridges, and like Remnington's percussion revolvers, has an easily detachable cylinder. It was made as a competitor to the Colt Single Action Army and saw some success in that regard due to its sturdy quality.
However the 1875 was not a huge success, due to the two years that Colt had ahead of Remington in the cartridge department, Colt had already seized all the army contracts and Remington was forced to seek other markets. 10,000 were ordered by the Egyptian Army but few were actually delivered since the Egyptians had not paid for Remington's rolling block rifles which they had already purchased, however some 1875's saw use with Indian police on the British colonies.
Famous users include:
Frank James
The older brother of Jesse James, who was a Remington lover ever since his time in the Civil War, carrying a Remington 1875 for most of his latter years until he gave himself up to the law in 1881.
Buffalo Bill Cody (William F. Cody)
Though better known for using Winchester rifles and Colt revolvers, he was documented to have used Remingtons, including the 1875 model during his Wild West shows.
