Asuka Langley Soryu is one of my favorite characters in Neon Genesis Evangelion, she is the pilot of the Evangelion Unit-02 (Eva-02) which unlike Eva-01 or Eva-00 it's the 1st Evangelion designed specifically for combat while it's predecessors we're more of experiments. Asuka comes off as some bossy and independent girl who's really annoying, but it's actually a facade, as during her childhood, her dad abandoned her and her mom, while her mom suffered from some kind of disease thing (Schitzophrenia I think) and often mistook some weird looking doll for Asuka and told her things like "Die with me Asuka."

but then one day, after she got the news she'd be the pilot for Eva-02 as a child, she excitedly went to tell her mom, and when she opened the door to her room found her mother hanging from a rope in the ceiling which left her incredibly devastated.

After her mother's funeral she swore to herself she would be strong and independent and to never cry again, that being the reason she doesn't often open up to others and tries to be independent and often feels useless when she needs help from others as she tries to do things by herself.

During the movie 'The End of Evangelion' (1997) after the brutal attack to N.E.R.V he finds herself fighting against multiple Mass Production Evangelion inside of Eva-02 in which she kills multiple of them, after the Eva's umbilical cable is cut off it switches tl auxiliary power giving her 5 minutes, but eventually she had some sword thrown at her, but her A.T. Field (Absolute Terror Radius) shield thing protects her but then the sword shifts into a replica of the Spear of Longinus which pierces the A.T. Field catching her off guard and piercing through the Eva's head in which she feels the pain of the stab in question.

With the Eva inoperable she crashes out and starts losing her shit before being impaled by various fake Spears of Longinus leading to her being brutally diced and leading to her end in The End of Evangelion... As of the Rebuild of Evangelion movies I haven't seen em' yet...
