To get the desired effect in the image (if you want), add blur to the base then add glow that is the same color as the gas (You might have to adjust the glow to get it to look good)

Put the galactic core behind the base and connect it to the figure, add glow and blur. Connect the dark bands to the galaxy and blur it a bit. Finally, put stars over the milky way. (Optional)
