Humor is inapplicable to this animation, so I won’t critique it.
I will just be referring to this episode in this critique, rather than the entire series itself. Re:Darkboy has the Elements complex; great fight scenes but bad storyline and dialogue. However, while Elements has a much larger focus on the fight scenes, Re:Darkboy puts a lot of the chips on the storyline, and it suffers because of this.
This episode doesn’t exactly have the best dialogue. The pacing isn’t well done, and the introduction of the character Rage is also pretty botched. He’s supposed to be a really bad dude, and he even kills Kaido, but he is introduced getting food and being innocent. This could be pulled off, but the episode doesn’t do a good job with that. The fight scenes and animation quality are very good, and the effects are completely on point. However, it lacks a lot in the core qualities required for a series episode to be good, so there are points off for that. It’s better to just watch this focusing on the fights rather than the dialogue, as some of it isn’t high-quality. Were these aspects to be fixed, the series would experience a massive hike in quality.
Overall, as a series episode, it leaves a lot to be desired.
This was entertaining and is a series with good potential. Problems that plague this though is how confusing this gets. How do Kaido and Rito get to the point of fighting? Why do they fight? There is a main plotline followed here which makes this series story superior to others. The dialogue is rough and the overall story just needs work. The fight scenes are overall well animated and quite entertaining. The effects are cool and everything tends to be unique there. While characters aren’t very distinguishable by their looks, there’s a small amount of them with some different personality. Overall this ends up being above average, but not enough to get the respect of 3 stars. But it’s close. That story just needs to be polished more. It better layed out than most other SN series though. Hoping this is improved upon in the next episodes.
High 2/5.
