The shields held by the legionaries of the Roman Army back in the Iron Age, otherwise known as the Classical Era. the Scutum was one if the largest types of Tower Shields known in history and was the inspirations for modern riot shields.
It's design is built around getting all in an enemies face, completely protecting yourself while stabbing with the Gladius. The reason the were curved was to both better protect yourself but also to create a slit to see through while in testudo formation (that thing where they make a box of shields)
