Story and humor are inapplicable for this opening, so I won’t critique them.
This was underwhelming as an opening for a series. Openings themselves are supposed to reflect the mood of the series as a whole and demonstrate the fight between protagonist and antagonist. This feels more like a lighting and angle test than an opening. Though many of the animation aspects of this opening are sound, it fails to serve its purpose as an opening in the first place. Effects and lighting are on point, but it fails to describe an underlying plot. It requires viewer inference to determine that this is a zombie-esque story. There are definitely better openings out there, and this one itself just doesn’t set any tones or feel unique. Trailers are meant to be eye-catchers, and this one just doesn’t cut it.
Openings aren’t something I have been big on, but I know the general idea of an opening. It functions as an intro before an episode, reminding the viewer of the mood and focus of the series. Not every show has an opening, but many do and this feels like something you would see in an actual show opening. But the cinematic work here has me impressed. The lighting is perfect, the angles are very good, the movement of the camera to show the setting really enforces that mood. And this is really good surrounding that. As in intro to a series, I find it pretty decent. It shows what the series is with cuts to certain characters and any references. I’m mostly thinking of Tom Clancys Jack Ryan. It from what I remember did all of that. I’d say this is a bit above average. It does have me impressed for an opening.
