Basking sharks are the second largest shark, and the second of the three filter feeders.
They get there name from their habit of slowly gliding near the surface of the ocean filtering food, which people thought looked like they were basking.
During mating large groups of basking sharks will gather and males will nibble females and breach ( jumping out of the water ) for their attention.
They hold the record for the largest mouth of all sharks, at over a meter wide. they are a vulnerable species, being hunted for fins and liver oils. no successful matings have ever been documented.
