Hierophants are demons created by Nekros' Guardian, in order to draw out their power which demands a void and darkness in them, allowing their despair and anger to fuel their power. An idea that no Nekronian agrees with, and despises their guardian for it. (Guardians are my universe's versions of gods).
These demons are created via rituals or a Nekronian dying of extreme hunger, which is presumably why Hierophants claw and devour. They are the first sign of an attack, a message; Hierophants.
