HMS Prince of Wales, a King George V-class battleship, had a brief but significant career in World War II. Despite being sunk less than a year after commissioning, she played a crucial role in various key actions. Notably, she damaged the German battleship Bismarck, forcing it to retreat, and escorted convoys in the Mediterranean, where she faced Italian air attacks. Her final action was an attempt to intercept Japanese convoys off Malaya, where she, alongside the battlecruiser HMS Repulse, became the first capital ships sunk solely by air power at sea. The wreck of Prince of Wales now lies upside down in the South China Sea, a symbol of the changing nature of naval warfare.
