• Useless car fact #2: unibody vs body on frame.

Unibody vs body on frame is the style in which a car is built. Body on frame is the oldest way of manufacturing a vehicle, because of its simplicity, acceling in offroad performance, towing capacity, and easier repair, however, body on frame cars lack the safety that unibody frame cars provide, although unibody cars are inferior in towing and offroading, they provide proper safety to occupants. Unibody cars where first invented in the 1920s, but didn’t gain traction until the 1950s, and really became popular when the malaise era hit (higher gas and oil prices, which made big cars more expensive to own) in the 1970s. Because of this, cars like the cadillac eldorado and the chevrolet caprice either had to move to unibody construction or be discontinued all together. Leaving only trucks and semis to use body on frame construction. But later, in the 1990s, there where some cars trying to hold on to the body on frame configuration, for example, the impala, crown victoria, Lincoln town car, chevrolet caprice and buick roadmaster just to name a few.
Modern vehicles that are built with unibody construction are the honda accord and civic, Toyota camry and corolla, chevrolet impala (1999 to now), and some lightweight trucks and suvs. Modern cars that use body on frame construction consist of the chevrolet silverado, tahoe and suburban, ford f150, explorer and expedition.
