March 23, 1868

Today we received a letter from the president, saying that we would have to go to his office to rescue him and take him to Washington. He couldn’t stand being near the infected anymore. But Commander Garry D. said we would arrive on the 26th of this month, but Lincoln said not to delay too many days because he was impatient. Anyway, I’m anxious to see the president’s face for the first time, but I don’t want to die on the way and I will fight for the Union forever.
