might be others with more info, but you grab animationMenuAtlas from the /assets/{HD and SD}/atlases/ folders and edit them
most people just play with the colors but you can also draw on the buttons/etc in that atlas image
save it and place in /skin/ folder properly

But I also put Templates and original files for others to use. Templates are cool since things are layered out and even separated some foreground icons from the background of the button.
Link to it is in the group description. If you need an editing software for it I recommend Photoshop (Paid), Gimp (Free) or Photopea (No install).
But for mobile devices Medibang seems to work the best. Just get ready to use rectangular select tool, which takes a lot of time.

Apk editor to get atlas files. Then edit them in Photoshop or smth.
If you have pc and want something like free Photoshop I recommend searching Photopea
