William murdered 6 children and got away with it. But why the heck didn’t they check the suits earlier during the investigation? It was only when they reported odor, that they checked the suits.

Sure like , there’s the whole thing with the suits but they assumed missing and then murder ? If I’m remembering correctly
While child murder is very much depraved and evil , there’s killing kids and then full on torturing and doing all this dumb shit , no one in their right mind would really immediately go after the suits , especially if the only thing that ticked them off was just the smell of the corpses rotting
The theoretical clean up job that the killer did would definitely span enough time for the suits to possibly even be used while the corpses where inside of it or plain old storage , either way , in a realistic setting , stuff like the dumps , any possible “burial”-esk areas , and evidence of their actual murders would be combed over first before looking at the shit stained mascots
