I’ll try to simplify it as there are many moving parts to Lucky’s backstory.

Lucky was a former Valkyrian soldier who was tasked with keeping the below world relatively safe. On a mission to supposedly “survey” an area, him and his squadron were jumped and captured by Null soldiers. It turns out, Luckys trusted and beloved commander had set them all up, as he was secretly working with Null himself. Lucky was then ritualistically turned into a Null soldier, aswell as his other squad members.

The process was interrupted though when a couple of other Valkyrie units who just so happened to be nearby, saw the ritual taking place. Lucky was the only one to survive the transformation, and was stuck in an awkward state between a half Valkyrie and half Null. This resulted in his Essence being greatly damaged, changing its color to green by chance.

This screwed Lucky up so much that he wasn’t in the right state of mind at all, spouting sentences almost incoherently. The Commander seeing this, decided to sentence Lucky to death, disguising it as a mercy, when in reality, Lucky was the only living proof of his plans.

Not going into too much more detail, but he ends up escaping to the ground world thanks to the Commanders assistant, who gave him the Mask of Nyseth, which gave him his free will back.
