The Spitfire is often assumed to have earned it’s name from it’s ferocious guns kills in air combat and firery engine starts as seen here, however it likely owes just as much to Reginald Mitchell’s successor, Sir Robert McLean and the pet name he gave his young daughter, Ann, who he called “the little spitfire”
