So guys the internet is over, net neutrality was repealed today!

^ This is the hysteria going on right now, don’t fall into it. Alright I’m making this post because, surprisingly to me, a few people are asking about net neutrality and my stance. I try not to be politcal on this site so I’ll make this quick.

Now, half of you have no idea what I’m talking about. Then there’s half of you that do know but don’t care. Then there’s that last half that actually cares.

Here’s my reaction to “net neutrality” and the hivemind panic surrounding it:

    1) Everything is going to be fine…
No, Twitter isn’t going anywhere. Neither is Instagram or Facebook. No, Youtube will not start charging for views and Google will not cost $1.99 per search. Nothing is going to change. Nothing.

    2) There was no “Net Neutrality” before 2015…
That’s right. The whole NN bill didn’t exist prior to 2015 and guess what? The internet was just dandy. It wasn’t dial-up speeds, nothing was costing money out of the norm, nobody was on fire. So now that it’s gone, we’re going back to 2015 and everything will continue to be dandy.

And as a quick tangent, don’t buy into the names of bills. The name “Net Neutrality” sounds great! But so do a lot of bills, that’s the point of the name, to make it sound great. Is NN “bad”? Eh, not really, but point is don’t give the name so much credit.

    3) The hysteria…
Thanks to the tech conglomerates like Facebook, Reddit, Google, etc you’d think the world is ending. Truth is they give 0 shits about “neutrality” and consistently censor their respective websites and promote things they think are “good” or “right” or “acceptable” while pushing away wrongthink. I’m going off subject so I’ll stop there, but point is, don’t buy into their bull. They don’t give a crap and merely need to drive up panic to get what they want.

    4) NN realistically couldn’t do what it set out to do.
Not only did the NN rules make it harder for small businesses to enter the ISP market, but Obama’s FCC admitted that ISPs can willingly and with no punishment, stop calling their service “Broadband Internet Access Service”, and they will no longer be covered by NN rules. So what’s that mean? That the whole “internet fast lanes” and “slowdowns” could have been happening all this time under NN, it didn’t protect against it. So that’s a lie.

Here’s some reading on that so I’m not just spouting nonsense:

    https://techliberation.com/2017/07/12/heres-why-the-obama-fcc-internet-regulations-dont-protect-net-neutrality/
“…the 2016 decision revealed that (Net Neutrality) provides no meaningful net neutrality protections–it allows ISPs to block and throttle content…”

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/washingtonbytes/2017/05/15/can-isps-simply-opt-out-of-net-neutrality/
“…the DC Circuit suggests that a walled garden is fine as long as the provider “makes it sufficiently clear to potential customers that if provides a filtered services involving the ISP’s exercise of ‘editorial intervention.’…”

WITH THIS ALL BEING SAID, is the “idea” of what NN is good? Yes, but in a perfect world. Now we’re back to the FCC regulating the internet, as it should, and will take up problems on a case-by-case basis, as it should, rather than a blanket coverage of “do not do this” and “do this”. Less government = good.

tl;dr This isn’t the end of the internet, you won’t see any changes, Reddit can take their “slow-loading logo” scare tactics and shove it, Stick Nodes won’t change, we’ll all be okay, k bye!
