Replying to:Well the war began in 1955 and these soldiers look asian (this is a cropped photo where the BAR guy kicks a half naked probably NVA or vietcong soldier) so I’m fairly certain this is south vietnamese soldiers from the early stages of the war most likely before the US sent troops but sent equipment and advisers

It’s a carry handle. You hold while running or walking. It’s basically like an M16 carry handle but you can adjust it and it’s not the sight.
