Humor is inapplicable to this animation, so I won’t critique it.
This series has a boatload of potential with the amount of animation prowess currently being displayed, but it lacks a bit as an overall series with the dialogue and storyline. The storyline itself is basic (not a con) as Rito has to collect the demon horns of SMX, Kaido, and Mei in order to fight the antagonist or else the universe may be destroyed. Complications arise because getting the demon horn of an individual only results from killing them, and neither of the three wants to die. This premise could be pulled off in quite an interesting way, but the series decides to tackle the issue head-on, which unfortunately doesn’t allow the plot to develop as deeply as it could. The dialogue has quite the amount of errors to it, and the episode suffers from a number of pacing issues. There is quite a lot of “fight for one second, talk for one hour” in this episode. Rito as a character also could be pulled off better than he currently is, because the edge is overwhelming at times. Rito is a protagonist, but not necessarily a “good guy”, as he is mainly an anti-hero character who is willing to kill friends even to get what he wants. Many characters can fill this trope and still be likable, but Rito’s dialogue and actions oftentimes convey a very negative image of the character, making it harder to sympathize with Rito or stand with him as the main character. There are plenty of characters in popular media who are verrryy evil protagonists, yet are conveyed and displayed that makes them likable, as in “one loves to hate them.” However, Rito is evil without charm, making him simply a character one just hates. If these problems were to be fixed, the overall series quality would drastically improve. However, the animation. Oh. Oh. The animation. The fights. Oh, man. Beautiful.
TL;DR: Mediocre story beat and character personalities coupled with badass fight scenes and well-done animation, collectively creating a good series episode that has room to improve but stands well for what it is.
3/5. Good stuff, but has room to improve. And enjoyable!
Not bad. Pretty good actually. The combat is pretty good in this but pauses quite a lot and relies on slow motion often. This pulls away from the appreciation of how well animated the fights are. They capture an interesting style. Visually this is pretty good as it has angles, backgrounds, good effects, ect. But the character designs aren’t all very distinct and some characters could use more development. Rito as a character has been pretty well developed as he takes most of the screen time. The story is straight forward and doesn’t go into event in a very interesting way, but it does have an interesting story capable of some really cool stuff. Dialogue is quite flawed though with constant grammatical errors which can mess with interpretation. Otherwise, this is entertaining. But theres untapped potential behind fixing grammatical errors and tackling the idea of suprise in the storyline along with a few other things.
3/5
