The Rapier is a late Renaissance sword, of Spanish origin, actually, and was popular in Western Europe, both for civilian (as dueling and self-defence), and military use, throughout the 16th - 17th century.

Sometimes known as the 'Dress Sword'.

The Rapier is designed to stab quickly, and at a longer distance than a usual blade. Unfortunately it doesn't cut as well as other swords, and the user is vulnerable at closer ranges, so carrying a parrying dagger is recommended when using this weapon.

The French "Smallsword" was a direct continuation of the Rapier in duels, as it was lighter and shorter than it's predecessor.

All in all, the Rapier is a fast, and elegant beauty on the battlefield.
