DANGANRONPA: TRIGGER HAPPY HAVOC

Monokuma (モノクマ) is a central character featured across the Danganronpa series. He is a stuffed robotic bear and the self-proclaimed Headmaster of Hope’s Peak Academy who instigates the Killing School Life in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and the Killing School Trip in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair.

He later appears at the finale of the Hope’s Peak Series in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School, where he takes over the Future Foundation headquarters and initiates the Final Killing Game.

Monokuma returns in the Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles Series’s Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, where he orchestrates the Killing School Semester alongside his children, the Monokubs.

Monokuma is a teddy bear whose face and body are split symmetrically down the middle, embodying a design reminiscent of the Yin-Yang symbol, symbolizing the balance between two opposing forces. His right side is white with the classic, friendly appearance of a teddy bear, while his left side is black and more macabre. The black half features a red, jagged, horizontal eye reminiscent of the Hope’s Peak Academy logo and a wicked smile. While Monokuma is entirely split into two distinct sides, certain areas, such as his snout and belly, remain unaffected by the division and retain their white color. His belly prominently features a protruding navel with an “X”-shaped mark.

In Danganronpa V3, Monokuma’s design undergoes slight modifications as to fit the newer, slightly more detailed art style. He appears slightly more fat, with thicker arms, more defined lines in his hands, and a shading style that uses blocked patterns rather than blended gradients. His black side is also lighter, leaning more towards gray than black.

As a robot, Monokuma’s interior consists of various machinery and a built-in bomb. Despite his mechanical nature, he is often depicted with a tongue in promotional art and in Danganronpa V3.

Monokuma’s height varies in each installment. In Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, he is 75 cm (2’5″). In Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School, he is 65 cm (2’1″).

In Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, Monokuma maintained his appearance with only a few new things that changed in his game sprites. His body appears to be a little bit chubbier and small, and his black side seems to be a little more black-grayish in this game compared to the previous installments.

In Danganronpa 2, Monokuma briefly wears a light blue suit with a white shirt and a long red tie around his neck. The collectible Monokumas are seen wearing various outfits. In Chapter 1 he is wearing a bikini made out of clams and in his right ear he has a red hibiscus with him. In Chapter 3, he haves what seems to be a red Poncho and a Sombrero. In Chapter 5, he seems to supposedly be wearing a COMP from the Megami Tensei series.
