Once named D-16, he's a combination of brute strength, military cunning, ruthlessness and even honour in some cases, the leader and sometimes the founder of the Decepticons. His lust for conquest and power, he will attempt almost anything to achieve his goals in certain ways than not, either conquering other planets and capturing all of their resources to sustain Cybertron, trying to save Cybertron, etc.

He is an incredibly powerful, intelligent and fierce opponent and fires nuclear charge from his fusion cannon, it doesn't matter if you betray or are his opponent, death by hands of Megatron is an honour. Tho more recent incarnations depict the character in a more nuanced way, either both a miner or gladiator named after a legendary figure of Cybertronian Legend, (Megatronus Prime) who rose up against the corruption of Cybertron (G1 Marvel Comic/Aligned Continuity/Cyberverse/WFC Trilogy/IDW, etc), a cunning politician (TFA), a military general (Armada), A former ally/brother of Optimus Prime, and in some incarnations starting to redeem himself and opened his eyes (IDW/Earthspark).

Either continuity, whether he's evil for the fun of it (G1 cartoon) or depicted in a nuanced or have understandable motives, he now wages war against his former brother, Optimus Prime and his followers, the Autobots. "Peace through Tyranny!"
