The Joker stopped being able to feel pain in the New 52 storyline so he had a friend surgically remove his face, and made a brace to put his face back on and started torturing the entirety of the Bat-family because he thought they (robin, nightwing, batgirl, etc.) made Batman weaker. So he faked cutting their faces off, infected them all with the joker toxin near the end of the first part of the arc and then had a final showdown with batman and he landed in a strange liquid metal which stitched his face back on and then it became “endgame”. All the stuff before Endgame was NOT “Death in the Family”, it was “Death of the Family”. At the end of the DotF storyline, they figured out what the joker toxin was (which was kind of a big deal.) Once the Endgame thing started up, the dark multiverse batman, The Batman who Laughs started reigning terror on the whole universe and sought to bring Barbatos (the bat god) back to their world. That storyline was called Dark Knights: Metal. The Metal event nearly destroyed DC as we know it.
