I suggest using the one with facial hair. It looks better. One could argue the hair looks bad, but it's relatively faithful to what the samurai actually had. Let's just say they didn't have good barbers... besides ronin, the hair always look a bit like a pedo cut.
I will go into detail about everything (Functionally, Historically, and Name) here:
Armors
1A: O-Yoroi Armor
The O-Yoroi armor is based on the real samurai armor by the same name. It weighed about 66 pounds and mostly of Kozane ("Scales of laquered steel laced with silk, cotton, or hemp braiding" -Google). It was mostly used on horseback combat, because samurai loved horses, apparently. The literal translation in Japanese is 'great armor'. It first appeared around the 10th century and went into more widespread use in the 12th century after the Genpei war. The reason it was cavalry armor was because it was heavy and unwieldly, but designed very well for sitting yo ass down on a horse and shooting people. It fell out of favor in the 16th century.
This can all be ignored in animation, of course. The armor function normally as a figure. It is very customizable, with every orange part of it in the thumbnail color-changeable. The shoulder plates are also moveable too, but be careful, it is possible they could float away...
1B: Gusoku Armor
The Gusoku armor, based mostly around Tatami and Tosei-Gusoku. It is a loose term, but it is mainly comprised of the Samurai idea of modern armor and light (Although still protective) plus portable armor. The weight can vary from 30 to 50-ish pounds. Although it was modern armor, the actual concept of it has been used since the dawn of the samurai, it just evolved multiple times. Unlike the O-Yoroi armor, it was usable in close-combat, like duels, and could be used as infantry armor. Samurai still loved horses though, so they probably still rode them a lot... I guess they really don't like walking. They sit a lot.
The design of my armor was to be more stream-lined and sleak, as an opposite of the O-Yoroi's bulkiness and heavy weight. Everything bright-red can be color changed. The shoulder pads cannot move. You could draw eyebrows on them, though?
1C: Ashigaru Armor
Ashigaru, the ground soldiers of fuedal Japan, had a variety of armor; from none to heavily armored. For that reason, there is no relative term for it besides from just Ashigaru armor, obviously named after the wearer. It always had the Jingasa (The hat on top) and the symbol of their house (Not included here. Maybe I should've made my own house symbol? Jk). The houses were not actual homes or whatever... they were like clans. While everyone likes focusing on the Samurai, the Ashigaru were the true champs of Japan. They always fought in those major battles while Samurai basically just sat around (See what I mean? Always sitting).
The Ashigaru armor is simple and worn, not meant to be eye-catching or dazzling. Everything dull light-ish blue can be changed color to match the clan color. Who knows, you could start your own house and use these figures as bases...?
1D: Kimono (Armor?)
The Kimono was not armor. It was the Samurai's everyday wear. Like a t-shirt and shorts, but fancy. Higher-ranked samurai still had to carry around their katana all day, no matter what (The only exceptions being bathing and sleeping), so it wasn't exactly really like what we wear, but it was probably very comfortable. Look at Google, search up Samurai Kimono... I'd love to have one of these! There are also Hakama, which were specifically for Samurai, but this is not that.
I based this Kimono off of a Ronin-type design, which is also why it includes the Conical Hat. Ronin were Samurai who had lost favor, stopped liking, or had dead Daimyo. They then lead the life of a loner. The most famous ronin was Miyamoto Musashi; also known as the best swordsman of Japan.
Masks/Mempo
2A: Shogun Mask
The Shogun mask is based off of the Kensei mask from For Honor, but also derived from some traditional Samurai masks. The name is that of the military leader of fuedal Japan.
2B: Goshi Mask
The Goshi mask is a simple brown mask based on realistic mempo. The name refers to the lowest rank of Samurai, because the mask is rather bland.
2C: Oni Mask
The Oni mask is a rather demonic visage, with a name based on the Japanese demon, the Oni, along with the face looking like them.
2D: Ghost Mask
The Ghost mask is based off of Jin Sakai's (Ghost of Tsushima) mask. Don't have to explain the name, everyone knows what a ghost is (Right?)
2E: Hatamoto Mask
The Hatamoto mask is a fancy golden mask with a rather spiky looking 'stache. It refers to one of the highest rank of Samurai.
2F: Dragon Mask
The Dragon mask is a dragon-like mask (Who knew) that I based off a random product on Google. I had no idea what other type of mask to make, so this isn't realistic at all.
Crests/Maedate
3A: Ultimate Amateratsu
Ultimate Amateratsu, a huge golden appendage that probably causes a lot of neck and back problems, is refering to the main Shinto goddess, Amateratsu. It's also ultimate.
3B: Cobra Fangs
Cobra Fangs are cobra fangs!!
3C: Trident
It is named trident because there are three points, like a trident.
3D: Kami Blades
Kami are Japanese gods. Blades are sharp sticks. This is a circle with two blades. Therefore, Kami Blades.
3E: Cherry Blossom
The Cherry Blossom, or Sakura, is a beautiful pink tree - the crest isn't pink but it does have a flower. Good enough.
3F: Yokai
Yokai are demons of Japan. They are horrifying, and some have horns. This has red horns, so I thought that would be a good similarity.
Extras
Head with no facial hair Head with facial hair Headband The headband is attachable. The bun on the head is smart-stretchable, so you can make the helmet fit. The hair is smooth because it is meant to have a helmet/hat on. If you want to make a more crazy-haired -Samurai, like some kind of degenerate anime character, feel free to edit it.
That's all of it.
This is my 100th figure! It has been a long three years, but I've finally done it. Don't worry, I will keep making figures, I have a lot of plans. Such plans are ranging from a Roman/Greek weapon pack, a huge simple gun pack, more extensions/add-ons to this pack (Like free DLCs), and maybe even a female alternative to this pack? A front-view is also possible, but probably not anytime soon.
On the earlier topic of 'Extensions' to this pack, I mean more samurai armors, masks, crests, or hair-styles. If this pack gets good feedback, I make another pack of 10 masks and crests for further customization! If you have any ideas for armor/masks/crests, please say them in the comments or on a post! I would really appreciate it 🙂
Sorry for so much writing and a probably boring history lesson, but thank you to everyone who has helped me get to 100 figures! Let's aim for 200 next?
Have an amazing day, and remember, you are incredible
🙂
