Commonly called a Javelin by those with little historical knowledge, the Pilum comes in three varieties; the light, medium and heavy Pilum.
This is a Heavy pilum as you can tell by the iron ball on it's shaft. the Heavy Pilum was used against heavy armour at short ranges, usually to penetrate thick armour of to bring down an armoured horseman like a Parthian Cataphract. the Romans were very smart - they knew their opponents may just pick up the Pilum if it missed and throw it back.
To prevent this, Pilum spike's are soft, bending upon impact to render it useless once used as well as to inconvenience those hit further.
