It all started in 1942, the US Army requested something lighter than the M1 Garand which the Garand weighed either 9 or 11 pounds

Then, the M1 Carbine was introduced, the Carbine weighed 5 pounds empty and loaded along with a sling mount, it was bad luck for the M1 Carbine in 1973 when the M14 was produced forever replacing the poor M1 Carbine
