The legendary Katana, a weapon so elegant and revered. forged with only the finest steel and sharp enough to cut through steel...
No i'm only joking.
The Katana was forged in Japan for a whole 900 years simply cause it was cheap, easy to make, and sharp. Katana's were forged in a pretty average way, Europe forging weapons of far higher caliber at the same time period. Katanas were sharp only because their hardness allowed them to be, making them far more brittle than most other swords. Due to Katanas being such lousy weapons, Samurai would tend to have them as a backup, a last resort, only when they had no other choice but to use it.
Still, while it was pretty bad compared to say, the Roman Gladius and European Longsword, the Katana was at least nice to look at.
