As of 3.2.0, Stick Nodes will no longer automatically find downloaded files in your /downloads/ folder. You must open the file with Stick Nodes explicitly for it to be moved into the correct folder.
Download a NODES (or STK) or ZIP file. When done, tap it and "Open With" > "Stick Nodes". See this image for an example.
Sounds: Download an MP3 file < 256kb. When done, tap it and "Open With" > "Stick Nodes"..

If I attempt to download sticks using my ios device alone, will anything happen? (Side effects, etc.).
No, no side-effects, but it will probably be pointless as I don’t think it’s ever worked for anybody before you.
But go ahead and try, there’s no harm.
Yeah, it’s recommended to download the stickfigures with your computer and use iTunes to place the files in the correct folder, see the FAQ here.
Downloading the files with your device will just result in Safari saying it doesn’t recognize the file or something.
