Instead of magic (which he’s good at anyway) Max uses canisters filled with the magical essence that lives in Grodot, known as Vex. Vex has branches of it’s power, covering elements, energy, and other mystical powers. In order to use the Vex abilites, he needs to insert the canisters gun mag style.

The only element Vex does not have is electricity. Since Vex thrives on technology (which uses electricity) giving it more in a canister will overload it. This causes a violent reaction that has enough power to destroy whole planets.

These are all he has been able to make so far, as using these canisters not only requires skill and knowledge, but the ability to withstand and use Vex.
