Anomaly’s review of…
ALIEN: ROMULUS
Final Rating: 7.9/10Alien: Romulus is a movie that had an entire history left behind it. So much to all wrap in a bow, that going into it—I expected them to ignore it entirely. However, the film itself doesn’t buckle under this task. The movie is a near perfect encapsulation of all the series has built up, even across disjointed continuities and odd prequels. It nails on the head the tension between two genres of horror. A personal thriller and a massive epic, with characters you genuinely come to feel for. A well-acted strong female protagonist, and practical effects that will continue to define the sci-fi horror scene. It would be rated higher, maybe even 9/10…
…If not for the final act. An act that could’ve easily been written out with a single line in the script, and then this movie would be perfect. The fantastical narrative within Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and following Alien: Covenant have a place within the justification of the setting and narrative guide of many of the characters. The echoes and consequences of those films ring like chimes throughout the first and second acts, until the noise grows dissonant within the presentation of its finale. Not to spoil anything, but they go… *all out.* To say the least. Some fans of those prequel films may enjoy this aspect the movie, but not me. I hate those movies and I hated the final act almost *more* than those films combined.
Nonetheless, Alien: Romulus is a film for alien fans of any walk of life. A celebration of all that came before, and a detailed epic that’s accepts all of this cornerstone franchise. The good and the terrible. All in all, I recommend it!
i’m also a massive fan of the alien franchise so MY WORD IS LAW
Since we’re on the topic of Alien Romulus, one thing i want to criticize, is how dissapointing the main cast was for me, 40 minutes in and only three characters are alive, they all felt like nothing but cannon foder to amp up the kill count.
anyways, cool movie.
i would’ve empathized with them more if I could understand a single word of what they were saying
halfway through the movie and i only knew three of the like, eight character’s names
it was just alot more enjoyable than all the films after aliens for me
it wasn’t by any means perfect, like I wasn’t a big fan of Rook returning, but it was a fun film and I think they did it well
oh yeah and the use of practical effects and costumes, I loved that
