Anomalocaris (from Ancient Greek, literal translation “unlike shrimp”) is an extinct genus of early marine arthropod. It emerged during the Cambrian explosion, lasting from 520-499 million years ago, and was one of the largest animals of its era—commonly thought to be one of the earliest apex predators. The genus specifically belonged to the order of radiodonts, and like other radiodonts Anomalocaris had swimming flaps around the sides of its body, large compound eyes, and one pair of segmented appendages used to grasp prey at its front.
