Houndeyes were originally meant to be friendly but playtesters kept killing them off, leading to Valve making them hostile Xen creatures

They were also meant to be in Half Life 2 alongside the Bullsquid but were left behind in the beta versions

However, they do appear in “Missing Informaton”
