In fact let me give you a whole history.

During Pre crisis, after Dick retired and Jason was first introduced, Jason was basically an exact copy of Dick. Both circus performers whos parents died at the result of rigged performances done by a clown. The only difference was that Jason was a red head.

As with Dick, Bruce adopted him and Jason became the second Robin. Nothing remarkable happened, and eventually crisis in infinite earths happened, resetting the universe. Jason was then granted a whole new origin, and of course black hair. (As he should have lol)

Jason was a homeless kid, stealing to make his way. He eventually joined a home ran by an otherwise innocent looking old woman. She ran a front, instead of helping poor children, she taught them how to steal, fraud, shoot, etc. She made them run a gang like operation for her.

One night, Batman parks his Batmobile in an alleyway. Jason sees this and decides it’s his time to steal the wheels off it. In doing so, Batman returns and finds him. Batman doesnt retaliate, and instead befriends Jason. Jason leads him to where he stays, and Batman eventually finds out about that old woman from earlier.

Anyway, he shuts her down for good, and officially takes in Jason under his wing. Jason becomes Robin, though hes much more different from Dick. Hes more emotional, relating heavy to victims makes him more brutal towards criminals. One day, Jason finds out a mobster killed a woman who the justice system had failed. Jason gets enraged and goes after the man, pushing him off a balcony to his death.

Of course, Batman forces Jason to retire after this. While alone, Jason discovers documents that his mother is still alive. He becomes a runaway, desperate to find his mom, and in doing so gets ahold of her. They agree to meet at a specific location.

Jason goes in his Robin attire, meets his mom, but is ultimately backstabbed. His mother had only met him to give him to joker for money. Joker does his thing, beating him with a crowbar and leaving him to die in a warehouse. Before Batman can get there in time, the bomb goes off and Jason dies.

Yada yada, Superboy punches a hole in time, Jason digs out of his grave, this that, becomes Red Hood.
