“In the dark of night, we spotted two of our Iconic Sauropods, Thunder and Lightning, getting some shuteye. They are the only surviving Brontosaurus we have left in the Sanctuary after the disease ravaged nearly all sauropods, killing many and leaving the survivors just mere shell of their former self.

“Our Brontosaurus herd was over twenty adults strong, one of the largest sauropod groups in the sanctuary.
Thunder was one of the cows that lived in the herd, just entering her prime and ready for a breeding season when the disease hit the herd.
Lightning was just a calf the size of a donkey when it struck, though by then the disease had already hit a couple other sauropod species, so we were prepared and quarantined him and any of the other calves we could.

“The disease struck hard, and it didnt leave many survivors. Out of the original twenty adults and some odd young, after the initial wave of the disease had passed, only Thunder and a few other adults had managed to survive. But as time wore on, the herd continued to dwindle as the remaining few died to a combinations of symptoms including rapid weight loss, lameness, until finally they aren’t able to support themselves and fall down in exhaustion, unable to get back up. It’s almost always followed by respiratory failure and cardiac arrest, as the body will become too heavy for the exhausted animal to breathe or even pump its own blood. Humane Euthanasia is used as soon as the animal shows signs of the terminal disease and its effects.

“But thankfully we still have two amazing Brontosaurus left, who show signs of being happy and healthy. And perhaps in the future, we can see if these two can start up a new herd, once Lightning reaches his adult size of course.”
