A project I made to test my color skills, in a way. I recolor Pokémon sprites with proper hue shifting.

I’ve been noticing that certain details on the sprites look like they were meant to be hue-shifted, but weren’t because of the color limitations. Like I’m working on 092 right now, and he has a dark red accent near his eyes, but if I hue shift that towards purple, it matches his main color better. Or for 091, his main shading color was used for shading on his teeth, and when I hue shifted it towards blue, it matched the greys of his teeth better. I don’t know if this is just good sprite work or if I’m just way too used to hue shifting…

def were color limitations on graphics like these back in the day so that’s very likely the cause
its quite impressive how games back then got around limits like this

Limitations breed creativity
It’s a cliche saying, but it’s so widespread simply because it’s true
