Hood Irony is a genre of ironic memes in which meme creators make mock “gangsta” imagery and jokes using slang and memes related to Black American culture. The genre of memes ultimately satirizes the culture, turning the signifiers into content that’s avant-garde, nonsensical and oftentimes meaningless, reminiscent of stigmas surrounding Zoomer humor. Hood Irony became prevalent on Instagram, iFunny and Reddit’s /r/OkBuddyRetard subreddit in the late 2010s, spiking in 2018 and 2019. In 2022, content labeled “hood irony” surfaced on TikTok as well. Many memes and micro-trends fall under the Hood Irony umbrella, such as When You Outside And You Smell That Zaza, Ambatukam and Quandale Dingle, among other
