Adding some veriety is always a good idea. Never add this sort of thing simply cause you ‘need’ to, only if the character actually adds to your ‘product’.
Standly and Shasta in their little series which has started with the Standly’s Vector vid are a gay couple, but it applies to the story as they play the central role. Their sexuality however does not take away from the story, nor attempts to derail it. Instead, it weaves in as a part of the story.
On terms of design, donwhat you like. Stereotypical, non-stereotypical, your choice, design is design, as long as it isn’t lazy, bland or mediocre.
