The MP40 (Maschinenpistole 40, translated to Machine Pistol 40) is a submachine gun designed by Heinrich Vollmer and Berthold Geipel. 1933 is the year when Nazi Germany came into power, and the decision for a new machine pistol was made. Three candidates of the competition is the Steyr MP34, Bergmann MP32, and the winner; Erma EMP. The design for the weapon was changed, which eventually led to the design of MP38. However, its cost and time of production lead to a simple change; the receiver. The finalized version is called MP40, and the rest is history.

This weapon is nicknamed "Schmeisser" (the creator of the MP18) by the Allies, although he was not involved with MP40's design.

Design Details

Like most of the submachine guns made in the era, this weapon fires from an open bolt; and blowback operated. Despite not having a fire selector, its low rate of fire made single shots easier. The bolt features a telescoping return spring guide which serves as a pneumatic recoil buffer. The cocking handle served as a safety by pushing the head of the handle into one of two separate notches above the main opening.

There are two variants of this weapon; MP40/I and MP41. The first variant features a dual side-by-side magazine holder, and the second variant replaces the lower receiver with the one made for the MP18.
