Basically he creates ellipses that act like portals using his fingertips.
often times the are utilized against projectiles, such as beams, bullets, arrows, spears, etc. this is all made possible by a second pocket dimension He created when he first learned how to use magic, everything but him can enter it.These portals have the ability to catch things that are in motion, once the portal is closed the projectile or object that was caught will keep all of its speed and momentum until spookus lets it out.
So he can basically Catch a bullet one day, and then release it at another guy the next.

I should also mention that the ability is one that progresses in the series.
in the beginning it will only be able to expand to the size of a dinner plate, and during the end of the series he breaks his limit and makes it the size of a starship(which is about the size of a yacht). He never manages to make his portals that Large again.
This ability’s effectiveness also changes with the amount of magic he holds at the moment. If he’s feeling drained, the largest it can get is big enough to cover his fingertips.
