Left if you’re shooting or bracing yourself for an incoming shootout. SWATs use left when searching a building.
Right is when there is no danger at all, ther are at rest.

Left is for when someone is aiming and shooting the gun. If the gun is lowered to the hip, that is used for covering fire most of the time. When the gun is lowered and pointed towards the ground, it is for when it is relaxed.
