“On our routine patrols of the waterways throughout the island, we encountered a welcome sight. A pair of some of the largest specimens in the snactaury. A Shonisaurus mother and her two year old calf.
“These behemoths of water are social creatures by nature, with females and their young living together in pods, with males spliting off when they reach maturity and becoming solitary. The calf we have here is the first one born in the sanctuary since they were released into these waters. Hopefully more will come.
“Shonisaurus have no teeth, which considering what they feed on- fish and squid- is a bit odd, as how are they gonna be able to hold onto prey. The answer is that they feed on shoals of baitfish and squid, circling the schools of prey with their wide bodies perpendicular to the baitball and slashing out with their fins to drive the ball smaller and smaller. Then the pod will take turns running through the shoal with their jaws wide and drive fish into their throat pouch so they can then sift the water away from the prey.
“Seems Whales and these giants have convergently evolved ways to take as much prey as they can to sustien such large bulks.”
