• Nirvana - Bleach review
Hey all! Today I’ll be reviewing Nirvana’s debut album, Bleach. I know Load won the last poll but I haven’t fully listened to Load yet and when the first thing I saw when I opened the site was 2 posts that had 30+ comments and very few (if at all) likes, I felt like it would be to good to post something actually entertaining to the site again.
Bleach is the debut album of famous American “grunge” band, Nirvana. This album was released in 1988, back when they were nowhere as known as they are now. Anyways, to the review.
    The Review
First thing I’d like to point is that as far as I know, “grunge” isn’t really an actual genre and is more of a marketing term, and to me this album is punk rock (although with a lot of metal influence). Anyway, skipping the genre talk, this is a great album! As someone who only knew Nirvana from the more known songs in the later albums, I was kind of surprised by how heavy this album is. It’s filled with aggression and speed, and the guitars have pretty unique tones I haven’t really hard of anywhere else. I’ve heard similar stuff, of course, but nothing quite like it. I dont play any instruments myself, but so far as I know this album doesn’t have a lot of complicated playing in it (as typical with punk rock). That’s not a problem at all, though – while simple, the instrumental is very memorable and never outstay their welcome. The guitar and bass work are especially awesome. Also, the vocals are great! I love Kurt Cobain’s vocal performance in this album a lot, I feel like he fits the instrumentals perfectly. Not a lot to complain about musically, aside from variety – there isn’t a whole lot of it on this album, at least to me. Sure, there are some songs heavier than others (e.g. Floyd the Barber, Paper Cuts) and About A Girl is calmer than the other tracks, but aside from that the songs sound fairly similar. As for the lyrical content – to me, it’s just plain weird. I’m pretty sure there’s meaning behind most of the songs, but I can’t decypher a lot by myself. It’s kind of cryptic. That’s pretty much all.
Overall, Bleach is a damn good album without a lot of problems. I’d recommend this to anyone that likes punk rock, metal, hard rock or is looking to get into punk rock or the heavier side of rock music in general.

  • Metallica - Self Titled / "The Black Album" Review
Hey all! Like I said in one of the previous posts here, I’ve been gone for a while mainly because of school, but now I’m back. I said I was gonna review all Metallica albums, and now it’s time to review their famous self-titled fifth album. This album is essentially what got Metallica out of the underground scene and into mainstream music, and is hated by a lot of thrash fans and elitists for that reason. It is also their most famous album. Without further ado, let’s get to the review.
    The Review
I think this is a good album! I don’t think it’s as good as any of the first 4 albums, but I think it’s pretty solid in its own right. This album simplified Metallica’s music for a more mainstream audience, switching from a thrash metal sound to a “traditional” heavy metal sound, and as said previously, is hated by some for this reason, especially some thrash fans and elitists. Still, the songs are pretty memorable and catchy. The songwriting and production still holds up pretty well to this day. Another thing I like about the album is that the bass is actually audible this time around, in contrast to the muted bass of AJFA. Jason Newsted is a great bassist which I think Metallica could’ve utilized better in general. I couldn’t find a general theme from this album as I did with others. There’s enough variety and the songs are pretty memorable. I think some of the solos had too much wah pedal use, but I wouldn’t say they’re bad solos nonetheless.
The riffs are pretty good, as well as the vocals. Personally, I wish Metallica kept going in a thrash direction, but I do like this album.
Overall, the black album is a fine album. Is there better stuff? Absolutely, but this is a really good entry level album filled with catchy and memorable songwriting. You’re definitely gonna see some elitists and the like trash on this album and say Metallica “sold out” because of this, but don’t mind them. Not everything has to be complicated, simple music can be very good and memorable. If you want to get into metal but think some of the other stuff is too heavy, this is an amazing starting point. I definitely recommend this to anyone who hasn’t heard it and is looking to get into metal.
    FINAL VERDICT: 7.5/10

  • So, I’ve been gone for a while. Mostly because of school kicking my ass, but now that it’s over, I may continue the reviews. I say “may” because I don’t feel a lot like going back to writing detailed reviews for whatever reason. But in my absence I listened to a whole lot of albums and a whole lot of bands, so I do have a lot of stuff I could review. I just don’t really know how to write reviews as detailed as the Metallica reviews since in those I listened to the albums in their entirety a few times, now I don’t do that a whole lot. This is mainly for the music related stuff though, reviews of other stuff like games and movies aren’t really related to this.
Also, I got some patches I thought I’d share here. Gonna get a few more and get em sewed on my denim jacket.
P.S I’m gonna get an electric guitar on July, so may post stuff about that here and there.

  • Album Review - ...And Justice for All by Metallica
Hey all! As you know i’ve been reviewing Metallica albums and last time i’ve reviewed Puppets, and now’s time for Justice. AJFA is the fourth studio album of Metallica, and the first album featuring bassist Jason Newsted after Cliff Burton’s unfortunate passing in a bus crash, may he rest in peace. A song in the album, To Live Is To Die, was dedicated to Cliff. Let’s get to the review.
    The Review
I think AJFA is a great album! It’s not as good as Puppets or Lightning but that’s more because those albums are perfect than Justice is bad, it still is an amazing album. Justice is the most technically complex album out of their first 4 albums. It takes the complexity of Puppets and pumps it up a notch. It’s still generally aggressive, but I think it’s less aggression in the sense of adrenaline fueled anger and more aggression in the sense of hate, despair and hopelessness, if that makes sense. That’s the general theme of the sound of this album – despair and hopelessness, and I think it conveys the theme pretty well. The album has good variety, and while pretty much all songs in the album convey themes of hopelessness, that doesn’t mean they all do it in the same way. For example, One and Blackened are both songs that deal with hopelessness (specifically humanity’s hand in the destruction of the planet in Blackened and the pain a completely crippled soldier with basically no way to communicate anything faces in One) but they sound drastically different.
One thing you may have heard about this album is that the bass is almost inaudible (except for To Live is To Die of course) and I do think that’s the case. You don’t really hear a lot of bass in this album, but it wasn’t a big issue for me personally.
P.S, not related to the music but I think the album cover is great.
Overall, And Justice For All is an amazing album. While it’s not as good as RTL or MOP, it still is awesome and I highly recommend you listen to this album, it’s a damn good one.
    FINAL VERDICT: 9/10

  • Album Review - Master of Puppets by Metallica
    Brief Introduction
Hey all! As you know I’ve been reviewing Metallica albums recently, and I said I might review all of ’em. Yes, including St. Anger and (though there’s no way in hell I’m listening to the entirety of it) Lulu. I’m thinking that I probably will. Anyway, last time I reviewed Ride The Lightning, and now it’s Master of Puppets, their third album, released in 1986. This album might be my favorite album, the other contestant being RTL. Anyway, to the review.
    The Review
Master of Puppets is another album that is PERFECT for me. It retains the complexity of Lightning and pumps up the aggression a notch. The album has variety, while maybe less so than Lightning but that’s more due to RTL being a really varied album than MOP not being a varied album. It’s filled with emotions and no two songs sound the same. It kind of feels like a mix of RTL and KEA, if that makes sense – and it’s glorious. When I first started listening to it I was thinking Lightning may be better but I’m torn apart between them now. I don’t have a lot of other stuff to say about MOP. It’s aggressive, it’s fast, it’s complex, it’s varied and it’s simply phenomenal. I have nothing bad to say about this album!

Overall, Master of Puppets may be my favorite Metallica album. It’s one of the best thrash metal albums as a whole. It mixes the unfiltered aggression from KEA and mixes it with the complexity and variety of RTL, being the best of both worlds. I strongly recommend anyone who’s into thrash metal, metal or thinking of getting into metal in general to have a listen to it.
    FINAL VERDICT: 10/10

  • Album Review - Ride the Lightning by Metallica

    Brief Introduction
Hey all! Like I’ve said before, i’ve been listening to a lot of Metallica’s first 4 albums recently so I took the decision to review each of the first 4 albums. That, and the site’s still got a serious lack of entertaining posts. If I feel like it, I might also review ALL of their studio albums. Including St. Anger and Lulu. Though, don’t expect me to listen to the entirety of Lulu. That album fucking sucks. It might as well be among the worst music I’ve ever listened to.
Anyway, Ride the Lightning is the second studio album of Metallica released in 1984. Lets get to the review.
    The Review
Ride the Lightning is an album that’s perfect for me! My main (and basically only) complaint with Kill ‘Em All is that it’s a bit too raw and that it’s repetitive, and Ride the Lightning definitely improves on those aspects. Ride the Lightning is still pretty aggressive, but has a more complex and less raw sound. It’s not as aggressive as KEA, but it still is really aggressive. Along with that, the album is a pretty varied one, too. The album is filled with emotions, from the aggression in Fight Fire With Fire, to the sadness of Fade to Black. No two songs sound too similar. The instrumental and vocals (aside from Call of Ktulu which doesn’t have vocals) convey the emotions of the songs very nicely. This album may be my favorite Metallica album ever, the other contestant being Master of Puppets, which I will review soon.

Overall, Ride the Lightning is a phenomonal album that answers all my problems with its predecessor. It retains the aggression, but has a more refined and complex sound than KEA. I strongly recommend anyone who’s into thrash metal or metal in general to listen to it. 10/10

  • Album Review - Kill 'Em All by Metallica
    Brief Introduction
Hey all! This is a new group where I review stuff I’ve read, watched, listened to, etc. Recently I’ve been listening to the first 4 albums of Metallica a lot so I thought I’d talk about their first album, Kill ‘Em All, for a bit. While this is basically me yapping about music that was released 40 years ago, I decided to still write this because of a) boredom and b) the serious lack of actually entertaining posts on the site recently. Anyway, let’s get to the review.
    The Review
Kill ‘Em All is a pretty good album to me! Especially for a first album, it’s pretty solid. It’s fast, it’s aggressive, and it’s full of just raw energy. Very raw energy, in fact. While it’s an awesome album, that’s my main complaint with it. It doesn’t have the more refined sound of the later 3 albums. And when I listened to it a few times and then compared it to albums like Master of Puppets, And Justice For All and Ride the Lightning the difference becomes pretty clear. That’s not to say it’s bad, though. This album was a pretty good baseline to start from and develop. The other albums also have more variety in general, I feel like KEA’s sound is a bit more repetitive if that makes sense.

Overall, Kill ‘Em All is a good album. Not as good as the 3 albums that came after it, but it still offers a pretty good listening experience if you like thrash metal. 8.5/10

    • personally this is my second favorite of their first four records (behind puppets), i love the rawness on display and the direct superagression that runs through the whole album. the rest of their albums (especially puppets and justice) are mainly built on complexity (which there’s nothing wrong with, of course), but kill em all is based on just being a straight shot of adrenaline, and it succeeds at that. it’s just downright fun to listen to from top to bottom.

      • Replying to: scarlettpersonally this is my second favorite of their first four re

I can definitely understand that. Like you said, of the 4 albums this is the most raw and the later albums are more complex, and it essentially depends on preference. KEA’s main thing is unfiltered aggression and rawness, and it does it pretty well – it’s just a bit too raw and a bit repetitive for my taste, but it does what it’s meant to do really well. I think Master of Puppets is basically a perfect blend of both complexity and aggressiveness and Ride the Lightning was kinda a bridge between KEA and MOP.

Also I do agree that this album is really fun to listen to, I’m pretty sure i’ve listened to the entire thing for like 4 or 5 times at least and never got bored.

yeah, i completely understand that. they’re all great albums at the end of the day, it just comes down to preference. can’t really go wrong with any of them.
