Grimm, politics, prejudice… There’s a lot to be pessimistic about in Remnant. With all these ills being so prevalent, it’s no wonder so many of its inhabitants are cynics. Chenoa Paige used to be among them, but it’s amazing how infectious the optimism of close friends can be.

Chenoa Paige was a member among one of the many Faunus families displaced by the Great War. She was born in Menagerie, after her parents were herded there from their home in Mistral. Learning about the war from her family grew her distaste of nations and big government. She couldn’t understand how such a miserable conflict could come about over something as simple as land, and how a government of the few could determine the lives of many. Her father was a hunter, a fact she and her family were very proud of. Initially, whenever her father got work in Mistral she’d beg him to let her come along. After some convincing he obliged, but Chenoa was in for a rude awakening. She and her father couldn’t go anywhere without attracting negative attention. Their Faunus features flagging them as lesser to the citizenry of Mistral. Chenoa’s attitude dampened past these experiences, and it was a wonder to her how her father ever got work in Mistral at all. But his work shortly came to an end, a mishap during a mission causing her father grievous injury and subsequent retirement. This event jaded Chenoa even further, and she likely would’ve resigned herself to a quiet life in Menagerie if she hadn’t met a boy named Rowan during one of her trips to Mistral. They were introduced to each other during both of their early teenage years, where they had taken different approaches to their attitudes. Rowan was excited about his growing strength and career opportunities while Chenoa, given her experiences, had taken on a stereotypical apathetic personality. The two grew close in this short span of time however, and the idea of becoming hunters together began to float around in their minds. Eventually Rowan managed to convince Chenoa to give it a shot, receiving training and her weapon from her father, though she hadn’t shared the optimism about the impact they would have on the future until Rowan introduced Chenoa to Slate, heir of the Washburn Shipping company. With an influential figure on their side, the idea of improving circumstances in Mistral became more than just a dream, and in the back of her head she thought that maybe her idea of a world free from arbitrary treatment and borders could be a reality.

Even as a child, Chenoa had always been attuned to her surroundings. She felt every stare, kind or unpleasant. Heard every whisper, creak, and chirp in her environment, and deciphered every smell in the air. She often had trouble sleeping due to her acute awareness of the sound around her, alongside extensive feeling in almost every inch of her body. What afflicted her in the past became a blessing in the present. Her keen awareness of her environment perfectly suiting her for the role of sniper, given her incredible eyesight (and nightvision as a Faunus!), hearing, smelling and feeling, she can easily detect anyone and anything out of place. As if this incredible sense wasn’t enough, her semblance grants her near 360 vision within a certain range. Her rifle, gifted to her by her father, shoots high caliber rounds capable of piercing the skin of even the toughest Grimm.

At Beacon, Chenoa notices everything. Every word said about her or others, the looks she gets from other students, the movement patterns of the student body, and even the most minute detail of a given course. You couldn’t tell how much she notices by looking at her however. Usually she maintains a blank stare, speaking in monotone, and delivering jokes in deadpan. Partially because she finds it entertaining to mess with people this way, but also because she’s quite reserved. Noticing a lot of things means you process a lot of things, and she always thinks before she speaks; unless she’s among close friends.

Chenoa and Rowan had been close friends for a while, but it was only shortly before attending Beacon before the two officially started dating. Chenoa enjoys Rowan’s company, his impressive feats of engineering, and his immense strength, but part of her feels guilty for doing so. Rowan often goes out of his way to try and impress her, and while she tries to shower him with praise, she feels she hasn’t made the effort to reciprocate. Rowan assures her she doesn’t have to, but she can’t help but feel bad not being able to do the things Rowan does for her in return.

Being big and strong doesn’t mean you have to be scary. Cyane Lombardi is as soft as a cloud, inside and out!

Cyane Lombardi is the youngest member of the main branch of the Lombardi clan. She was often regarded as the runt of the family, being the weakest and smallest among her siblings. Her brother and sister often mocked her for her emotional sensitivity, and aversion to violence. She always had a stronger desire to protect than to destroy and was never a good liar, constantly wearing her feelings on her sleeve. Her father, having a lighter attitude towards his daughter than the rest of the family, figured sending her to a huntsman academy would both appeal to her good nature and harden her as a warrior.
Cyane’s polite attitude in no way impedes her ability to be a fearsome warrior. Her large stature, reach, shield and aura reserves make her a formidable opponent. Her warhorn when tuned can provide ear piercing sonic waves, and elemental effects when fed with dust. Not to mention its hardened wooden frame allowing it to be used as a powerful bludgeoning weapon. Her true nature is revealed through her semblance, which subconsciously conjures fields of protection and supportive items for her friends, such as coats, packs and parachutes.

Cyane’s reputation as a crybaby is well-founded. Her worries are always of others and she is prone to tearing up at the drop of a hat. She is unwaveringly kind, willing to help anyone at zero cost, which most might consider antithetical to her profession. Her emotional personality is endearing to her best friend Clementine, but grating to some others, such as Yolanda. Her favorite activity is cooking, a highly valued skill within her family. She enjoys cooking for friends especially.

The Lombardi family is one of the oldest and most powerful families in Mistral. Not only are they supernaturally tall, most members reaching seven-plus feet, but this seems to not affect them or their lifespans at all. Some say their ancestors were infected with some sort of hereditary magic, either as a blessing or a curse. They use their family history and power as politicians, merchants and warriors to strong-arm the Mistralian government. They’re in cohorts with various gangs around the kingdom as well. Cyane abhors such corruption and violence, but still harbors plenty of love for her family. Despite some of their borderline abusive behavior towards her.

Criminal mastermind, vicious killer, caring mother; depending on who you ask, these all aptly describe Morgan Carmine.

Morgan Carmine grew up in an up and coming settlement in Mistral. Daughter of wealthy aristocrats, she lived a life of luxury. She was academically successful as well, earning high marks in formal education, and was the local hunter’s star pupil. This hunter had the amazing ability to sense the future, and could gain an idea of the prospects of someone’s future through contact. His readings of Morgan had only ever been positive, when during the middle of her training he had sensed a terrible evil. One greater than he’d ever felt before. He immediately ceased her training, and told all in the village to be wary of her. Instantly her ideal life fell apart. Bystanders were afraid of her, friends abandoned her, and her family maintained a distant relationship from then on. Alienated from her own village, at age nineteen she travelled to the capital of Mistral to find work as a huntress. Her poor attitude, loose control of her own powers, and violent nature saw her career end as quickly as it started. Still searching for places where her talents would be accepted, she fell into various gangs around Mistral. As her reputation in the criminal underworld grew, so did her arrogance. She staged a coup attempt against the current gang leader, but the group of sympathizers she had gathered were fickle. She was driven out of the gang and the capital for the time being, with only one member of her group remaining by her side. Fed up with attempting to fit in with other groups, she started her own gang, and it slowly became one of the most terrible gangs in Mistral.

During her early criminal career, Morgan was quickly recognized as a deadly fighter and assassin. Nicknamed ‘Bloodstone,’ Morgan’s ability to control the earth she touched gave her the ability to dispatch lesser gangs by herself. Possessing both immense defensive and offensive potential, Morgan’s semblance allowed her to dominate battlefields. And her control over her power only got more precise as she aged. Although her semblance typically allow her to end fights before they even start, don’t believe for a second that her skills outside of it are lax. She is an impressive hand-to-hand fighter, and can handle most blunt weapons and small knives effectively, alongside some significant gun skill.

Almost universally, Morgan is regarded as a monster by those outside her circle. A hardened shell of a woman who is capable of committing mass murder without a second thought. While on the surface these claims are true, those inside her small gang experience a entirely different side of her. Morgan is unique compared to the typical selfish, greedy gang leaders of her kingdom. She built her gang off a sense of love, belonging, and mutual respect instead of fear. Every member of the gang is a misfit of sorts, and knowing the feeling of being ostracized motivates Morgan to care for and look after them. To the older members of the gang, she’s a trustworthy friend who consistently listens to their wants and needs. To the younger members she is a loving maternal figure, with the relationship between her and Lilac being especially close. So close infact, that Morgan and Lilac refer to each other as mother and daughter respectively. The difference between the treatment of those in her gang and those outside it are night and day.

Chapter 2 of the PRPL written series is finally out!

Poverty and disability can be hard to sort through, but Tawny Moone rises above expectations!

Tawny was born and raised in Mantle, where she, despite both of her parents\’ remarkable military service, grew up in poverty. Her mother was honorably discharged when she had became pregnant but her father continued to serve, eventually being killed in action. Ever since, her mother had been very protective of her. Even more so when she lost her leg in a Grimm assault brought upon the city during particularly heated protests. All this hardship failed to bring Tawny down however, and her wanderlust and interest in the unknown drove her to create her very own jetpack, reminiscent of the airships her father once flew. It took a lot of convincing, but after displaying an exceptional amount of skill and knowledge in the area of aviation and engineers, her mother finally granted her permission to sign up for a hunter academy. Beacon Academy.

Tawny\’s outgoing nature makes it easy for her to fit in with others at the academy. Her unwavering positivity allows her to become fast friends with her peers, including those outside of her team. She is quite the chatterbox, which can annoy the more solitary students like Pearl. Her interest in engineering can become overbearing as well. She often makes rude remarks concerning weapons, albeit unintentionally. She can also have a hard time reading others\’ emotions, such as the feelings of inadequacy brought upon Rumo with talk of her exceptional flight skills.

True to her inspirations, Tawny is a one woman army. Her flight skills provide an incredible challenge to those used to more conventional hunter warfare. Her back-mounted machine-gun tears through Grimm and bandit alike, and her proficiency at maneuvering makes her an impossibly difficult target. She is, in essence, a human airship.

Among her long list of amazing talents, semblance use is not one of them. She is without any supernatural power, even though her peers seemed to have unlocked their semblances ages ago. Maybe she simply hasn't unlocked it yet, despite her many hardships. Or perhaps she is apart of the population who live their lives without one. Either way, she's not going to let this fact dissuade her from pursuing the life of a huntress. -
Great things come in small packages. Clementine Kahel is the prime example!

Growing up in the slums of Mistral, Clementine has experienced firsthand the effects of a corrupt government. She and her small family of farmers lived in abject poverty. What little money they made from selling their crops would be cut short by hustling bandits, threatening them for cash. Her frustration with her living situation peaked when her father was killed due to being unable to meet the gang\’s demands. Afterwards she set out alone to get revenge, against her mother\’s wishes. Donning a cloak and blade, she went on a short lived rampage before being cornered by the gang. A huntress, wandering nearby, heard the commotion and came to her rescue. After witnessing her potential the huntress directed Clementine\’s attention to huntsman training, recommending her own previous academy, Beacon.

Clementine keeps a cool and confident demeanor, reassuring citizens and teammates alike with her apparent levelheadedness. This seemingly boundless confidence has attracted the romantic attention of Pahi Dhurma, who\’s feelings Clementine shares, albeit for radically different reasons.

Clementine takes a straight forward approach to combat, weaving in and out of range using her small stature and striking hard with her kali sticks. Her semblance allows her to expend aura to generate plants from her skin. Whether it be wooden shields and weapons, fruit and vegetables for the hungry, or flowers for Pahi.

Despite her pleasant appearance on the outside, Clementine harbors an immense hate and frustration within. Banditry is unforgivable in her heart, and she often needs to be held back when dealing with human enemies. She has abandoned the way of the blade for this reason, but there\’s no telling when she could return to it.

Desert flowers are hard to find, and Yolanda is a rare beauty indeed!

Native to Vacuo, Yolanda and the rest of the Kreiss family was nothing out of the ordinary. Raised on one of the many communes dotted around the kingdom, Yolanda dreaded her fate. One of an ordinary farm girl, married off and forgotten, or killed in a Grimm attack. Against her family\’s wishes, she sought out hunter training, and applied to Beacon to be rid of her family\’s influence. Her goal now is to become an unforgettable huntress, and to look good while doing it.

Yolanda is naturally talkative. Whether it be about the newest fashion trends, the hottest gossip, or her latest kill; she\’s never afraid to share. She\’s constantly striving to the be life of the party, and is always the loudest in the room. When she\’s not announcing her achievements to an audience, she\’s conversing with her best friend Kari. An odd pairing, considering how much she \”despises\” his brother.
Yolanda is an incredibly versatile fighter. Naturally athletic and acrobatic with the smarts to match. She can handily outfight, outrun, and outwit an opponent. In terms of weaponry, she\’s especially fond of daggers and knives. Close range armaments complement her semblance well. Her power, intoxicating aura, allows her to secrete a mist that weakens all that comes into contact with it. Presenting her the perfect opportunity to strike.

During her attendance at Beacon, Yolanda has grown a distaste for certain students, particularly Lilac. Maybe it\’s jealousy. A perceived rivalry between her and Lilac\’s astounding talent. Maybe she can\’t comprehend Kari\’s affection for her. Worrying that she\’ll steal one of her closest friends. Unable to understand her feelings herself, she veils them. Acting passive aggressive towards Lilac in their encounters. Of course, Lilac\’s social ineptitude causes her to remain oblivious to both Yolanda\’s hatred, and Kari\’s crush.

-
You would never guess that someone as small and pale as Kari Neverwinter hailed from Vacuo, but he’s used to defying expectations. Born as fraternal twins, Kari always resided in his brother’s shadow. Unable to live up to the standards placed upon him, Kari instead chose his own path. Forgoing the masculine dress worn by the rest of his clan, and adopting a more feminine look. He focused on acrobatics over athletics, and outwits and outmaneuvers his opponents instead of crushing them head on.
Kari sees combat as a performance. He dances around Grimm like they’re bulls, and makes sure to belittle and humiliate his human opponents through various gestures and taunts, along with spurious amounts of giggling. Outside of battle however he is quiet as a mouse. Only opening up to his team and his best friend Yolanda.
His weapon is a hilt that can be loaded with different types of dust for varying effects. The standard load is of ice dust forming a sharpened blade. Earth dust creates a blunt baton, and fire dust allows him to spew it from the end. His semblance, flash freeze, allows him to to paralyze any part of a living being he touches, keeping their limbs rigidly in place for a moment.

Replying to:
Now onto the post
Pretty neat character with the usual basis of “speed > strength” trope being honestly lifted up pretty well here
The description of their fighting tendencies really in grave how they act , in conjunction with his actual personal tendencies being more closed off with the exception of seemingly close allies and ofc his best friend , WHICH , I think works extremely well with his >grew up in his brother’s shadow
aspect10/10 pretty neat colacho master

Now for their fairy tales. I feel Slate\’s and Clem\’s are fairly obvious, but the others not as much, especially Tawny\’s which might be the biggest reach of all my origins so far.
Slate is obviously based on George Washington, specifically the cherry tree tale which was completely made up. As such it can be used as a origin even if George was a real person.
also writing this now I just realized that his semblance could be to coat himself in wood because people thought George Washington had wooden teeth and that would make a much better semblance and that\’s his semblance now. You don\’t know how hard I wanted his ability to be detecting truth because of the whole \”I cannot tell a lie\” thing but that\’s Robin\’s semblance in the show so no dice.
Tawny is based on Amelia Earhart. This I think is the flimsiest origin I\’ve thought of so far, as Amelia\’s life was relatively well documented, the only thing of major speculation being her death. I think her disappearance has garnered enough speculation and theorizing to become a myth of it\’s own, justifying the origin.
Clementine is based on the Lorax. Pretty clear I think. Environmentalist and orange checks out.
Kari is based off of Cold-Miser from the miser bros. This is a kind of obscure reference I admit, but I thought it was fitting. I wanted a fairytale origin for two competing brothers and this was perfect for it. And again, I think festive fairy tales are a really interesting drawing spot for inspirations.
-
Kari Frost was born in Vacuo. He was one in a pair of twins. As he trained to become a warrior he constantly felt overshadowed by his brother. Unable to match his brother’s raw strength, Kari instead focused on acrobatic agility and expert swordsmanship. He also adopted a feminine style as a way to separate himself from his hyper-masculine brother. He and his brother applied to Beacon, where they unsurprisingly fell on the same team.
Kari is eccentric. Hunting grim is an artform for him, and he takes his looks and training equally as seriously. Taunting and grandstanding against opponents in the middle of a battle is all part of his grand performance. And he uses his feminine appearance and affects to aggravate opponents in battle. Outside of combat though, he’s as quiet as a mouse. Contrasting his loud-mouthed brother.
Kari fights using a dao with a firing mechanism integrated into the hilt. His flexibility and acrobatics allows him to dodge opponents easily. Winning against stronger opponents with a death by a thousand paper-cuts fighting tactics.
His semblance is flash freeze. He can expend his aura to cause internal freezing, paralyzing the affected body part in placed for a short time.
