I mean, it pulled the “High school student finds some random inner power and is now stronger than everyone in the school”

Not quite, you got it wrong, There was story before Baki was at the high school and shown fighting.
You see he’s basically in a constant conflict with his father Yujiro Hanma the strongest creature alive and want’s to earn his father’s love and respect so he trains and it all leads up to a fight which is actually the most recent manga story arc.
Baki was already strong before high school, even then Baki as much as he is the main character, other characters get their own story arc’s like Hanayama Kaoru.
I can see why you think that because you’ve probably only seen the anime but yes there’s more.

To summarise, Baki was strong prior to high school and fights and grows stronger to earn his father’s love and respect.
