Naruto is great for a multitude of reasons. But I’ll go with one of the most universal reasons

1. It’s one of the most influential anime ever made. They call it one of the “Big Three” for a reason

This show’s popularity and influence to other mangaka is almost as large if not bigger than even that of One Piece (which is also apart of the big three)
But when anything becomes popular it gets a lot of misconceptions. But hey that happens.

2. Great fights

Excluding the infamous Pain fight, Naruto has some great fights, some of the greatest fights in anime

The choreography and animation most of the time is superb, and the story the fights tell are there. Just look at the Rock Lee VS Gaara fight

Rock Lee is a loser. He has no Ninjutsu (basically magic, usually elemental) no Genjutsu (illusion magic) and when he started out he even sucked at Taijutsu (martial arts). He was trained by Might Gai, who saw himself in Lee

Might’s father, Might Dai was a loser. A glorified janitor that even adults made fun of. Once Kakashi (Naruto’s and Sasuke’s master for most of the series) teammates died, Gai was one of the replacements, and even though Gai could use Jutsu, he was still a loser, but through training and hard work Might Gai is equal if not superior to Kakashi

Rock Lee trains in Taijutsu, and his “Ninja way” is to prove that quote “I can be a splendid ninja, even if I can’t use Genjutsu it Ninjutsu. I wanna prove the whole world!”

Lee is still pretty weak though, but he has a trump card

Gaara has an extremely troubled past. When he was still a fetus in his mother’s womb, his father sealed the 1-Tailed Beast inside of him, turning Gaara into a jinchuriki, and killing the mother when she gave birth. Gaara has a brother and a sister, but he was kept away from them for most of his life. Gaara father was the kazekage AKA ninja mayor of the Sand Village. He saw Gaara more as a weapon than a son. And like any good weapon smith, he keeps him away under major surveillance and protection. Gaara was pampered as a child, which made him tempered, and sometimes arrogant. Though he wasn’t always inside his house, he had to go to school of course. You see, Gaara has the ability to ‘bend’ sand, but the sand is infused with his mother’s chakra (basically magic energy) and Gaara doesn’t even have to think to use this ability. He hurt a lot of kids and a lot people, so a lot of Sand villagers got scared of him, and the Kazekage was egged to kill him

Gaara’s father tries to kill him, but the sand protects him. The only person who truly loved Gaara was his mother and her brother, his uncle died on a mission.

After his father’s attempt on his life, he doesn’t trust anyone. He doesn’t understand love anymore. He sees himself as a weapon, and the purpose of any weapon is to kill.

So in short;

Rock Lee is an untalented underdog who can’t use ninjutsu

Whilst Gaara is a gifted child who has never been hurt in his life.

In the ninja world there’s a ninja exam called the Chunin exams. There are 4 Ninja ranks

Genin-beginner ninja who have just got their headbands. They’re usually assigned D-C ranked missions and are usually pretty weak

Chunin-Journey man ninja who are allowed on C-A missions. Once all three members of a team reach this rank, they have the option to disband (although most don’t)

Jonin-Expert ninja who are allowed on A-S missions. They’re usually adults who are put in charge of the teams.

Kage- Basically ninja mayor. These guys are extremely powerful and are the leaders of their respective villages.

Every once in awhile Chunin exams are held so genin can rise in the ranks. They’re known for being extremely difficult.

The only other way to become Chunin is if the Kage personally dubs you one.

More ninja pass the earlier parts of the exam than expected, so they have preliminary matches

Lee gets matched with Gaara

At first Lee can’t do jack sh!t to Gaara. Gaara’s sand is protecting him, and Gaara is literally just standing there.

A few moments later Gai gives Lee the all clear to remove his leg weights. This makes one hell of a difference

Lee is fast enough to outrun the sand barrier and does what no one has been able to do yet

He hits Gaara

He tries to use a special Taijutsu technique on Gaara called the “Primary Lotus” where Lee kicks his opponent in the air and then slams them into the ground

But Gaara is extremely heavy, so it’s harder to get him into the air
He eventually does get him into the air, but the technique causes immense pain. Seeing an opportunity in Lee’s agony, Gaara escapes the hold, replacing his body with a sand clone

Lee is very tired after performing the move, and has to sit there and tank an onslaught of attacks from Gaara

After taking a multitude of blows, Gai gives Lee the OK to open up the gates

A special technique called the “8 Hidden Gates” is a forbidden technique because of its effect on the body. Gai teaches Lee the gates anyway and Lee uses them

The thing is Epitaph looks at animation professionally and if you don’t that’s fine, not everyone wants to treat animation like a job, but Epi is extremely passionate about professional animation

The thing is animations like these? They aren’t gonna get you anywhere, I know that statement’s blunt but it’s true. Maybe they’ll get you a spot on YouTube but you won’t be as popular as fully fledged animators. Even Alan Becker is capable of putting together a story albeit a simple one, and he CAN do more than just stickfigs, but the look’s already confirmed and the chosen one is characterized as just a silly doodle.

Professionally, Animation is a huge blanket term. A lot of people say animation is just about animation but that’s an uninformed unprofessional statement.

Think of it like this: A lot of people think that all there is the FPS games is aim, and whilst aim is very important there’s a lot more to it than that

To be competitive at most FPS games you have to have good aim, good game sense, good map knowledge, good teamwork in most cases etc etc. Now replace aim with animation. Yes animation is extremely important, but there’s more to it. There’s good character design animation wise, good composition, good sound design, and in most cases, good humor or story.

The thing is animation is extremely effective at telling a story, as it isn’t as heavily bound to reality as live-action shows, and with animation being as powerful of a story-telling tool, why do we only see fighting animations?

Sure fighting animations are fun at first, but they’re all flash no substance most of the time. Sooner or later your eyes will adjust and realize that there’s nothing there but a short lived grenade.

If shows were all fighting scenes with two blank figures all the time, no one would give a sh!t. It’d be brainless entertainment that could be soo much more!

And the internet consensus in a lot of the cartoon community is that “Good animation doesn’t mean sh!t if everything else is bad”. The best example I can think of is SAO and most anime made by A-1 pictures. The writing is terrible and even highly offensive at times (A scene in the fairy dance arc is f#%king vile, and I have no idea how it got greenlit for commercial release) despite the rather crisp animation.

You’re probably gonna say something like “Sorry dude too long to read” so I’ll put my main points in short:

Epitaph takes animation more seriously than most, and is more ‘passionate’ in his replies.

There’s a lot more to animation than just the animation, despite what some may tell you. I could make the smoothest bouncing ball animation and no one would give a sh!t.

If you’re planning to become professional, stickmen fighting eachother for no reason isn’t gonna get you far.

And before you say it; No we can’t just let them figure it out on their own. When was the last time you taught yourself something and how long did it take compared to being taught by someone with experience? The fact that it’s taken this long for the idea to even be mentioned is telling of how you can’t trust people to learn it on their own.

Oh and Epi means we’ll I promise
